“What to do after College/University?” is a question you’ve probably been wrestling with for some time. It’s been a real roller coaster over the last few years.

You’ve invested a lot of time, money and energy to get to where you are. And now what?

What’s next now that you’ve Graduated?…

Blog summary:

  • Just Start (Your Own Business After College/University!) – you’ll learn so much by doing and who knows where it could lead…It can be tough finding a job out there so create your own!
  • What’s Stopping You Launching A Business After College/University? – you may be thinking that you: “need more experience first”, “don’t have enough money” or “don’t have a good business idea”. However, this is all in your head.
  • You Don’t Need to Go “All-In!” – this is a common myth. You can still work (full-time or part-time) and start a business. You can start small, experiment, tweak and repeat.

You’re maybe on the fence, asking yourself what to do after College or University. Don’t worry ’cause you’re not alone.

Just Start (Your Own Business After College/University!)

The most obvious way to get started is to: Just Start. And one of the best ways to “get a job” is by making your own job!

Or, if you wanna get all Nike about it, “Just Do It!”. There’s a reason this slogan was, and is still, so successful. Oh yeah, like starting a business after college/university is that easy?! Well, yes – although, maybe not to begin with.

However, it is totally possible, and we’ve worked with lots of college and university students and graduates who have successfully started their own businesses. You can do it too!

Is it easy? Absolutely not. Is it worth it? 1 MILLION PERCENT!!! Business doesn’t get easier, however, you become a better businessperson. You can learn so much from your studies, from podcasts, from videos, from business books and lots of other resources. However, nothing prepares you for running your own business, like running your own business!

It’s like when you take up a sport, when you learn music, or when you do any other hobby – you just learn by doing. Sometimes you can’t learn from just reading a book. You need to experience it.

You don’t learn to swim by reading books so you might as well dive in!

You just need to understand what to do, break this down manageable chunks and get started! You’ll probably learn more in your first year of business than any other year, and that’s what makes the journey you are about to embark on so exciting!

When you first start out, you don’t know what you don’t know. And this is perhaps one of the most challenging things to grapple with. However, this gets better with experience.

Obviously I don’t know you yet, and your individual circumstances, so this is all very general advice. In short: just start! Now.

Am I repeating myself? Yes! Why? Because this is so important. This is the stumbling block for most people that completely derails their entrepreneurial journey before it even gets started.

One of the saddest things is when people have a great idea and do nothing about them! They literally sit on them for years and keep them on the “back burner” forever. And then one day they say, “I had the idea for the company 10 years ago!” (but didn’t act on it!).

Don’t be that person! Don’t live and constantly think “what if?…”. You don’t want to regret not trying something do you? You never know where it could lead…

What’s Stopping You Launching A Business After College/University?

“Action is the most important key to any success”, according to Tony Robbins – the famous life and business strategist, and leadership coach to some of the world’s most successful people.

So next time you ask yourself what to do after College/University, consider: solving that problem you (or other people) have that you can’t find a solution to, turning your hobby into your career, choose living life our your terms, go travelling and work remotely, sticking up your middle finger to the “conventional” 9-5 in some soulless corporation.

You don’t need to start your own business to find your purpose, live the life you want or do work that you enjoy. However, for many, this is the way they have chosen to do it.

So, what about you? What are your thoughts on starting a business after Graduation? What’s holding you back?

Lack of money, lack of confidence, and you not thinking that you’re good enough – all of that’s in your head.

My quick answers to all of those are: you probably don’t need as much money as you think you do. Your confidence will grow over time. You’re already much better than you think you are so give yourself more credit! You can learn on the job. Many other students and graduates started a business before they were really ready and you can too! Plus, there’s lots of help out there (hello!).

There is never a “perfect” time to launch a business. The time will never be right and there are at least 1,001 reasons not to start a business after College or University: “I need more experience first”, “I need to do more research”, “I need more money”, “I’m just not ready”, “I’m not good enough”, “I need to finish my business plan first”, “I’ve not got a website yet”, “I still need to order some business cards”, “I’m having a bad hair day”, “Its raining!”…blah, blah, blah. Just start!

You Don’t Need to Go “All-In!”

One of the biggest myths perpetuated by hustle culture is that you have to go “all in” (…bruh).

People often think in the media, or in the general population, that you have to go all in. It’s your business or nothing. And that’s just not true!

You can still work and have your own business – be it full-time or part-time. You can work on your business in the morning, in the evening, at weekends, on your lunch break (toilet break!). And you can do this when you’re still studying too. You really don’t need to go all in!

I know this almost sounds counter-intuitive – it doesn’t feel right. However, there is some evidence to suggest this is true: from our own experiences of working with lots of student and graduate entrepreneurs over the years and in things we read.

For example, I’ve just read a book recently called, ‘Originals – How Non-Conformists Move the World’, by Adam Grant. The book looks at “originals” in every field; politics, sport, inventors, creatives, and business.

He talks about this “all in” myth in the book. This is particularly prevalent in the entrepreneurship space. The general vibe is: “if you’re not fully invested in your product, service or your idea, how can your customers be? Or how can any investors be? How can your staff be?”.

On the contrary, Grant writes about some examples of successful businesses that hedged their bets. In other words, they didn’t go all in.

For example, Warby Parker, an American company which makes really stylish glasses. There were four co-founders, and a few of them still worked in other jobs whilst they were setting up the company, so it’s totally possible for you to do a bit of both too. So what are you waiting for?

What’s really holding you back from starting a business after college/university?….

In reality, the only person holding you back is NOT your partner, family, friends, lecturer, careers advisor or anyone else! It’s you.
